Long ago, before people<\/em>
lived in the North Land and<\/em>
began their own fighting,<\/em>
there was the first feud . . .<\/em>
between the mountain and the sea.<\/em>
Katahdin claimed,<\/em>
“I am the greatest mountain,<\/em>
the most beautiful place in the North Land.”<\/em>
And, indeed, it was <\/strong>beautiful,<\/em>
with its majestic icy-white peak<\/em>
like diamonds stacked to the sky.<\/em>
The Atlantic Ocean claimed,<\/em>
“I am the most beautiful place in the North.”<\/em>
And indeed, it was <\/strong>beautiful,<\/em>
with its shimmery swells<\/em>
like an endless sea of emeralds.<\/em>
In this original fable, the mighty mountain Katahdin and the powerful Atlantic Ocean have a fight over who is the most beautiful. Their weapons are thunderstorms and waves, blizzards and hurricanes–weapons so powerful that all the land between them is destroyed. In the end, they regret their feud.
